When do you need a crown?

The situations that call for dental crowns can be loosely classified into the following 3 categories:
  1. To protect a weak tooth. This is the most common situation. For instance, you may need a crown to protect a root-canal treated tooth, a broken tooth, or a tooth with defective large filling.
  2. For cosmetic reasons. Just as a porcelain veneer, a crown can be used to cover a badly stained tooth, to close gap between teeth and to correct the alignment of the mildly-mispositioned front teeth.
  3. To preserve or re-establish your jaw relationship. This situation is only seen in people with severe bruxism.

An ideal crown should be both aesthetically pleasing and mechanically strong. However, for a particular tooth, the two requirements are not equally important. Carefully evaluating the two aspects is critical for achieving exceptional long-term outcomes. In our office we have the luxury to choose from a wide variety of crown types to address your particular needs. The crowns we offer range from traditional full metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns to more advanced all ceramic crowns (PFZ, e-Max, Zirconia). During your free consultation, the dentist will explain to you the features of each crown type and help you make the best decision based on your unique situation.

Crown procedure

First appointment (crown preparation): takes about 1 hour
  1. The doctor will first review your medical history and make sure the procedure is safe for you.
  2. Your tooth will be anesthetized to make sure you are comfortable during the whole procedure.
  3. The tooth is carefully reduced with a high-speed dental hand-piece to make space for the future crown.
  4. Final impression of the prepared tooth is taken and sent to a quality dental lab to fabricate the final crown for you. The color of the crown is also selected at this point.
  5. A temporary crown is made for you chair-side and cemented with a temporary dental glue.

Second appointment (crown delivery): takes about 20 minutes
  1. Doctor removes the temporary crown and cleans the tooth.
  2. The final crown is tried in on the tooth and some minor adjustments may be needed to completely seat the crown.
  3. An x-ray is taken to make sure the crown fits the tooth perfectly.
  4. The crown is then cemented with a permanent dental glue.
