How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are typically made of titanium alloys that are bio-compatible (non-toxic and not rejected by human body).  The science behind dental implantology is a biological process called osseointegration, in which dental implants are able to fuse tightly with surrounding bone.  After implants are surgically placed, it usually takes 3-6 months  for the implant to osseointegrate. An implant abutment is then secured to the implant by a small screw and together used as a foundation to support a crown, bridge or denture.

• Minimize loss of jaw bone that is usually associated with missing tooth/teeth.

Dental implant procedure

Dental implant treatment typically needs to go through 3 major stages:

1. Radiographic imaging and treatment planning stage. Radiographic imaging is required to locate vital structures, such as sinus, major nerves and blood vessels. Additional information will be collected to help answer a series of questions: Are you a good candidate for dental implants? Do you need bone graft? Which implant system is best for you? Do we need a surgical guide to help protect vital structures during the implant surgery?
2. Surgery stage. Based on the treatment plan, dental implant(s) are surgically placed at this stage.
3. Restoration stage. In this stage, dental abutments are attached to implants to support a crown, bridge or denture. In most cases, we have to wait at least 3-4 months to start this stage after the implant placement to allow implant(s) to integrate with the bone. However, for some missing front teeth where small diameter implants may be a good option, we may be able to  perform implant surgery and give you the crown at the same day.
